Dear nippers and parents,With only a couple of weeks to go it's hard to believe the season is almost over. Fantastic result with 20 results placed in the top 6. Our carnival crew are becoming like a well oiled machine at these events and put in a lot of work in to make sure things run smoothly for the kids. Thanks to Nikolai and Kelly for their help organising the team, transporting boards and providing water safety. Thanks also to Kathryn Wallis for her help in transporting and setting up the marquee and Simon Fawcett for being our qualified offical.

Dear Parents and Nippers,
Welcome to the start of season 2010/2011 . It was great to see so many old friends and new faces at registration day. For
those of you who are new to the club or new to nippers a very big welcome. At Black Rock LSC we have a strong family focus and aim to introduce our nippers to the skills needed to become lifesavers while having a lot of fun both on the beach and in the water.
The purpose of these newsletters which we aim to send out through the season is to provide information and reminders about upcoming events, to give an overview of training and to hear from our coaches about what is happening in the individual age groups.
A few things to note about our program.
- All our coaches and everyone who helps out at the club are volunteers and we ask every family to contribute in some way to the running of the program. From coaching, to cooking the BBQ, to selling uniforms, there is a job that will suit everyone. So please speak to us at training to see how you can help.
- This year we have introduced online payment for membership fees. For those that haven't finalised your membership yet, please do so as fees are now due. If you have any queries about this process please email or ask at training.
- This year we have introduced a Junior Competition Squad. This group is trained by Nikolai and is for the children who have a strong competition focus and commit to competing in 5 carnivals across the season. If you would like to know more about this group please speak to Nikolai at training.
- If you are using club equipment outside of training times then please only use boards marked with a "J". Before taking any equipment out of the clubhouse please introduce yourself to the lifesavers on duty and they will let you know what time the equipment needs to be returned by.
- Is training ever cancelled because of the weather? We still train when it rains but depending on the severity we might modify the program slightly. As per Life Saving Victoria policy we don't train when the weather forecast is above 38 degrees C

Coaches reports.
Under 5 and 6
"We've got off to a great start and the 4 and 5 year olds are having an excellent time. The children are learning the basics of flags, beach sprints, wading and using the boards. We're having a lot of fun and we've got lots of parents to help with our training. Think we have some future champions in our group." Lindsey and Rachel.
Under 7 and 8
"We have a lot of new nippers in this group but already they are getting the hang of flags, sprints and all loving getting out on the boards. We are working on basic techniques for both beach and water events and hopefully we will see some of these children competing at carnivals throughout the season. Thanks to all the children for their enthusiasm, we are having a lot of fun at training." Julie and Nikki
Under 9/10/11
"We are concentrating on swimming at the moment to ensure the children are able to swim the distances required for S badges. I hope the children all enjoy the season ahead and have fun as well as learning water skills, getting fit and enjoying a great Australian pastime.” Yvonne

Under 12/13/14
“At this stage we are all concentrating on fitness, endurance, speed and getting ready to compete, also having fun along the way.” Kev
Junior Competition Squad
"Currently we have 8 Junior members showing fantastic strength, speed and stamina. My goal is a committed fun and healthy approach to developing further Juniors showing desire to compete. Team members are awarded with a Junior Competition Team Singlet after attending three LSV Junior Carnivals. My vision is to get members of the Junior team to State Level so I am always adapting training strategies and offering diverse methods to cater for different development levels. As well as offering guest trainers and training at different surf locations, I take a personal approach and treat all athletes as individuals with the view to improving their ongoing skill level giving them a sense of real achievement. I believe parent input and commitment plays a big part in assisting the overall development of the team and individuals so I strongly encourage your time. I am looking forward to hitting the beach with the motivated Juniors (and parents) competing at the State Carnival in the Ocean Grove. I think they have a lot to show and it will be lots of fun." Nikolai
Carnival at Ocean Grove LSC- December 11th
This coming Saturday is the first junior carnival of the season at Ocean Grove LSC. Our juniors have the opportunity to compete against other nippers from both bay and surf clubs. Nippers U7 and above are eligible to compete in competitions such as flags, beach sprints, relay and board races. We suggest that all nippers attend at least one carnival over the season. If the children are not interested in competing then their support in cheering on their Black Rock team mates is appreciated.
Older Children who will be competing in water events will need to gain their S badge prior to the day and this assessment will be carried out at training as required. On carnival days we still run a modified training session at Black Rock but as many of the coaches attend the carnivals any extra parent help we can get is appreciated.
The program for Junior carnivals can be found online at http://www.lifesavingvictoria.com.au/resources/documents/2010-2011_LSV_Sport_Calendar_V1.2.pdf
Can you help?
A big thank you to Helen (Hayley's mum) who has offered to run the bar for us on Thursday nights. We have also had a couple of parents offer to help Josie and Jane with the BBQ this season so thank you also. If anyone is interested in helping out our coaches then please speak to myself or your child's coach, the more helpers we have the better the program we can offer our children.
Congratulations to Thomas Merrill who has recently gained his Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC). This is a qualification that is required for all members in the U14 age group and involves many valuable skills including first aid, resuscitation and the ability to perform water rescues. Thomas passed his assessment with flying colours and was praised by his assessors for his thorough knowledge across all the competencies. Well done Thomas!
