Nippers News Letter January 2011

Happy New Year to all our parents and Nippers. It has been great to see so many of you back on the beach after our break and also toJan 2011 nletter2see so many new families as well. Welcome to our program.

January is a big month on the junior calendar, we have already had one carnival at Cosy Corner Torquay where a number of our nippers performed exceptionally well (see Nikolai's report below) and we have another carnival coming up at Elwood on the 29th where many of our nippers will compete for the first time.

So what is involved in a junior carnival?
Our juniors have the opportunity to compete against other nippers from both bay and surf clubs. Nippers U7 and U8 compete in flags, beach sprints, wade and relay races. The older groups also have the opportunity to compete in swimming, iron and board races. Nippers don't need to compete in all events for their age group only those they feel comfortable with.
Jan 2011 nletter3The carnivals are great fun, generally run very well by Life Saving Victoria and the kids get a huge thrill from being part of such a large event. You can register for the carnival by putting your child's name and DOB on the white board at the clubhouse or by emailing me at this address. If you have any queries please speak to your child's coach at training.

On carnival days we still run a modified training session at Black Rock but as many of the coaches attend the carnivals any extra parent help we can get is appreciated.

Dates for your diary

Saturday 29th January- Elwood Carnival

Saturday 29th January- Junior Sleepover at the Clubhouse

Starting at 7.30pm, we will meet at the clubhouse after dinner. Movies and popcorn for the kids, lights out at 10.30pm. Bacon and eggs for breakfast on the deck. All children attending will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Cost $5 per child.

Saturday 19th Feb- Trivia Night. One of the best nights on the club calendar. Come and have a drink and a laugh with other nipper parents and test your trivia knowledge against the club seniors. To RSVP or for more details see the whiteboard in the clubhouse.

Coaches reports.

Under 5 and 6

The U5 and U6 are having fun learning the basic nipper skills. They are enjoying flag races and are gaining water confidence through diving/jumping through the hoops. We have just introduced kick boards as another way to help them gain confidence.
The kids favourite activity is the boards and it is great to watch them learn how to paddle!!
It was also great to see how much they had learned when participating in the BR Intraclub carnival.
We can see champion Life Savers in the making!!
Thanks for all the parental support - this makes it so much easier for us to run the session!!
- Lindsey and Rachel.

Under 7 and 8

Everyone is progressing well and developing new skills on the beach as well as in the water. We have a lot of keen paddlers and we have been practicing board starts as well as having some fun board races. Many of the nippers in this group are now confident paddling out around the white markers and we also have a lot of proud parents cheering them on. The focus for the next couple of weeks leading up to the metro carnivals will be to work on flags, sprints and wading.

(The following YouTube clip was recommended to me. Great viewing for any budding beach flag competitors with some good slow motion sequences...)

Under 9/ 10/11

"We are concentrating on swimming at the moment to ensure the children are able to swim the distances required for S badges. We have started swimming around the white markers and many of the children are gaining confidence in the open water”

Under 12/13/14

Everyone is putting in and striving to reach their peak.
PLEASE NOTE ALSO THAT EVERYONE THAT REACHES THE AGE OF 13 by the 1st of October  will have to do their Surf Rescue Certificate.
Under 14's can also train and compete with Junior and Seniors.
Under 13's are not allowed to use long boards in competition, unless they have their SRC.

Junior Competition Squad

What a great day we had at the junior carnival at Cosy Corner, Torquay!  Again parents andJan 2011 nlettercompteam siblings alike all got into it and enjoyed the action. Our Junior competitors should be very proud of themselves as all showed new skills, speed and good technique picked up during the extra summer training which helped them achieve personal goals. Show stopping races were performed by Ebony Francis who came 1st in Girls U8 Flags, Sprint and Wade Race. It is worth mentioning that all Black Rock competitors earned championship points for our club by placing in the top 6 in at least one individual event. It was great to see such a fantastic effort and collaboration from all of our Age Managers and parents organizing our competitors into composite teams and stepping in to assist LSV officials with marshalling and recording place getters. A special thanks to the Wallis's and the Fawcett's for transporting and setting up our Black Rock marquee.
Brilliant effort Black Rock!
Looking forward to our third
carnival for the season at
Elwood.
- Nikolai

Thank you to Lynette Shelley and Georgina Waters, our lovely new uniform assistants. They will be available to help you select and purchase uniforms prior to most training sessions. And don't forget our current stock of rash vests are all half price thanks to a grant received for sun protective clothing. The older style are selling at $10 and the new printed rashies are only $20, but only while stocks last.
