Nippers News Letter March 2011

Dear nippers and parents,

With only a couple of weeks to go it's hard to believe the season is almost over. Thank you to everyone who has been involved this year, our coaches, the parents who run the bar and BBQ on Thursdays, the brave ones who jump in the water and help the coaches (especially on the last couple of Thursdays), the parents who have trekked all over the State so their kids could compete at carnivals, those that help out with uniforms... the list goes on so thank you to everyone who has helped. The season was a great one, we had a lot of new families join the club and had a much higher carnival attendance than we have had for a number of years. It has been wonderful to see the kids having fun on the beach while developing their lifesaving skills.

Carnival Report

March 2011 nletter 1There's a lot of carnival updates since our last newsletter. On 20th Feb we had 17 nippers compete at the Point Leo carnival and on 26th Feb we had 11 nippers make the trip to Lorne and compete there.
At both carnivals we had 20 results placed in the top 6 and all the competitors did a wonderful job representing Black Rock.
Our carnival crew are becoming like a well oiled machine at these events and put in a lot of work in to make sure things run smoothly for the kids. Thanks to Nikolai and Kelly for their help organising the team, transporting boards and providing water safety. Thanks also to Kathryn Wallis for her help in transporting and setting up the marquee and Simon Fawcett for being our qualified official.

Winter Pool Training

Dates for pool training look like being April 28, May 5, 12, 19 and 26, June 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, July 21 and 28, August 4, 11 and 18.
These are Thursday over term 2 and 3 with a break for school holidays. Sessions are run at Klim Swim on Tulip St from 7.30 to 8.30pm.
Pool training is not swimming lessons but is lifesaving skills in a pool environment and nippers are also trained for pool competitions. Nippers need to be able to swim 25m unaided to participate. If you are interested please place your child's name on the whiteboard at the club. The fee for winter training is around $60 per child and is just to cover the cost of lane hire.

Winter Pool Competitions

Life saving Victoria run a series of Pool carnivals over winter, mainly at Klim Swim in Cheltenham. Unlike the beach carnivals these are much smaller in size, generally run for a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon and are much more relaxed events than on the beach. Events include obstacle races, kickboard rescue, line throw and child/parent relays. We have quite a lot of strong pool swimmers within the club and we would love to have a bigger presence at the pool carnivals this year. Dates for the first 2 carnivals are May 1st and May 15th starting from 2pm. The pool program can be viewed at http://www.lifesavingvictoria.com.au/resources/documents/Junior_Pool_Program_20103.pdf

Looking to get fit, brush up on your first aid or learn CPR?

Then getting your Bronze Medallion in surf lifesaving may be for you. We have had a number of parents achieve their Bronze Medallion qualifications through the club and all have loved the experience. Trainers within the club run a program in the evenings that covers first aid, CPR, beach rescues and other lifesaving skills. The qualification is nationally recognised and how proud would your kids be, to be able to say "my mum/dad is a lifesaver". Having this qualification allows you to be a water safety official at carnivals and also makes our club training a safer environment. The course normally runs just prior to the next summer season starting, around October or November. If you are interested or have questions please speak to me at training or email me at this address.

***** I have just learned that Sandridge LSC (Port Melbourne) are running a Bronze Camp later this month so if you are interested please let me know ASAP***************

See you on the beach,
Julie
