Nippers News Letter January 2012

Welcome back to all Nippers families.  We hope you had a great break over the festive season and are ready to hit the beach. We have tried to put together all the information we think you might need to help you enjoy the lifesaving season with BRLSC5 and please don’t hesitate to talk to one of the Junior committee members if you have any questions or suggestions at all. Kathryn Wallis, Heather Para, Simon Fawcett and Julie Aylward.

Carnivals/Competitions

All Nippers are encouraged to attend a minimum of one carnival each season plus our own club carnival.    If you have never experienced one you will find it a fabulous family day out or weekend away. If your child isn’t ready to compete you are welcome to come along and cheer your club members on. We often find that after attending one carnival most Nippers gain a taste for Surf Sport and are keen want to attend more.  With a local carnival at South Melbourne next weekend we are hoping for a great turnout of Black Rock Nippers.
So what is involved in a junior carnival?
Our nippers have the opportunity to compete against other nippers from both bay and surf clubs. Nippers U8 compete in flags, beach sprints, wade and relay races. In addition to these land events, the older groups also have the opportunity to compete in swimming, iron and board races.   Nippers don't need to compete in all events for their age group only those they feel comfortable with.   At each Nippers Carnival, Black Rock sets up its own marquee as base camp for the day.   Parents and children meet there in the morning and are given programmes and advice about the carnival. Thereafter families can use it for relaxing between events, storing their items and having lunch in the shade etc
The carnivals are great fun, generally run very well by Life Saving Victoria and the kids get a huge thrill from being part of such a large event.  You can register for the carnival by putting your child's name and DOB on the white board at the clubhouse or by emailing Kathryn Wallis at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

On carnival days we still run a modified training session at Black Rock but as many of the coaches attend the carnivals any extra parent help we can get is appreciated.
Relay teams for carnivals: We have some great competitors for the relay events but often need more to make up teams at carnivals.  This weekend Heather and Kathryn will be talking to age group coaches and parents to see who might be ready to be invited to join our relay teams for both land and water events.

Competition Team.

Whilst it is not compulsory,  Nippers who really want to focus on surf sport are welcome to join the competition team for training.  There is no level of skill required just a willingness to train hard and improve their skills.
S Badges Children wanting to compete in water events in addition to the land events (U9 and above) require an S Badge ( swimming competency tests are run at the club please see your age group coach if you wish your child to be tested)  but can still compete in the land events if they do not have an S Badge.   If you have any enquires regarding carnivals and want more information, you can visit the website or contact Kathryn Wallis on 0408251266 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Congratulations A small group of Nippers competed at the Cosy Corner (Torquay) Carnival with great results, earning our club points in the process.   A great time was had by all with 2 x 1st  places achieved (U9 Girls Surf Swim & U9 Board Relay, 1 x 2nd  place (U9 Boys Surf Swim) and 2  x 3rd places (U9 Girls Flag Race & U9 Girls Board Relay).   2 x 5th places in under 8’s land events.  Well done to all those who competed.

4Upcoming Social Activities

At Black Rock Lifesaving Club we strongly believe that happy children and parents make a stronger club. Therefore we endeavour to add lots of fun stuff throughout the year where the families can get to know each other better.

Nippers Sleepover: Saturday 11th Feb

Starting at 7 pm after an early dinner; we meet at the clubhouse. Free play for a while then movies and popcorn for the kids and lights out at 10.30.   In the morning everyone enjoys a bacon and eggs breakfast together before heading home.   Cost is $ 5 per child and its BYO sleeping bags, pillows and mats.

Trivia Night

This is a thoroughly enjoyable night and one of our social fundraisers. We hire a professional trivia host and the night is always very popular and a lot of fun.  Organise tables of your own or sit on a table with others and make new friends…..   So please support your club and book a table. If you plan on attending, please register via the Nippers Notice Board.  Payments can be made online via the SLSA online payments system.

Friday Night Sunset Drinks & Dinner (20 Jan, 17 Feb & 16 March)

Location, location, location: Its doesn’t get better than the black Rock LSC balcony for Sunset dinner and drinks. It’s your club and we want to you enjoy all of the benefits. On the 3rd Friday of each Month, the club will be open from 6:30pm for families to come down and enjoy the sunset whilst sipping on your favourite drink and eating your dinner. Many of us usually pool our money and buy pizzas / fish and chips etc.  The kids get to run around and have fun while the parents get to catch up and socialise….always a fun night.  You can BYO drinks, use the BBQ, get takeaway or buy a drink from the bar. You may also “bring a friend” who may be a non member by signing them in.

Water Bottles and Sun Smart policy1

It is expected that all children are completely covered with sunscreen before attending a Nippers session, however if you have forgotten to do so you can find a bottle of sunscreen in the clubroom, usually on the bar.
Children are encouraged to drink lots of water whilst enjoying their time on the beach and to make this easier, each age group will have a blue bucket for bottles to be kept in during training.   Coaches will advise the children to take a drink between training events.   Please ensure that your child has a named bottle with them each week and collect before you go home.

Annual Nipper Awards & Attendance Records

Each year our club has an awards night where we celebrate the achievements and efforts of our Nippers and their wonderful coaches.   This year, the awards night is scheduled for Saturday 2nd June and the awards may include:
Overall Girls Junior Champion
Overall Boys Junior Champion
Age Group Champions (for each of U6, U7, U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U13, U14 for each of Girls & Boys)
Surf Education Certificate Awards
Some of these awards are based on attendance and or a mix of competition results.  So that we can better ascertain attendances, we will from this point of the season onwards be tracking the attendance of children through a weekly registration process.   You will be asked to sign your child in as you arrive at the club.

Fund Raising

Roadside Tin Shakes

Twice each year we hold roadside tin shakes to raise money.  This is our main avenue of raising funds for the club and we find that people are keen to donate.   This is a positive experience for everyone who participates and we provide the official surf life saving uniforms tops for you to wear.   Our next tin shake is on February 5 and we also have one planned for March 25.
We ask that every family participates in one of these tin shakes each year for a 2 hour block between 9am and 5pm at either the corner of Bay and Bluff Roads or Balcombe and Reserve Rds.   We will put a sheet up on the Nippers Notices Whiteboard Area and ask that you put your name against one of these sessions for either of the two dates.

Grill’d

Southland logo_200Great news! We've been nominated to participate in the Grill'd Local Matters donation programme at Grill'd Southland this month.
Every month, Grill'd Southland is donating $500 to local groups and asking their customers to decide who the money goes to.
When customers buy a burger, they will receive(must ask for) a token to put into one of three jars representing different groups. Whoever has the most tokens at the end of the month receives $300. The other two groups receive $100 each.
To do your bit to help the cause, spread the word and head on down to Grill'd Southland.

3Parent Volunteers

We are in need of extra volunteers for the Thursday Night BBQ.  Please contact any of the Nippers Sub-committee members or place your name on the roster on the Whiteboard.

Safety

Lifesaving is all about safety in the water, but we also like to extend this to the beach and clubhouse.   If you have any safety issues, please let one of the Nippers Sub-Committee Members know of your concerns or place a note in the Nippers Suggestion Box located on top of the Kitchen Bench.
It has come to our attention that the spiky bushes at the side of the road are becoming hazardous to Nippers exiting their cars as they obstruct view of oncoming bikes for some children and have caused injury to eyes and ankles.   Please take care when exiting your cars and discuss the issue of looking for cyclists on the track when exiting vehicles, check your footing and take care.  We are in the process of formally notifying the Bayside City Council of our concerns regarding removal or “taming” of this vigorous and spiky vegetation and are hopeful of a positive outcome.  We will keep you updated of our progress.
Please ensure Nippers are accompanied by an adult when using the internal stairs and when in the downstairs area.  We have equipment such as anchors which are sharp and can cause injury and need to keep children away from this type of equipment.   Often the stairs become overcrowded, so we recommend that Nipper groups head downstairs via the external exit where possible.
During training, please stay on the beach, so that you can accompany your child to the toilet if necessary.  If your child leaves their Nippers training early, please let the Coach know, so they do not end up searching the beach for your child.

General Housekeeping7

Outstanding Membership Fees

We have a number of families who have still not paid up their Annual Membership Fees.  Your membership Fee includes an insurance component, so at this stage of the season we are not able to allow your child to continue to participate in the program until payment has been received.

Outstanding Working With Children Checks (WWCC)

Life Saving Victoria mandate that all Senior members of Life Saving Clubs aged 18+ must have current working with children checks.   As we value the wellbeing and safety of your children we ask you to please do so if you have not already and we will begin actively following up on those members who have not given us a current WWCC.

Outstanding Uniform Payments

A number of Families have purchased uniforms, but have forgotten to pay for them.   Any member with outstanding payments due is asked to rectify this ASAP.   We have an Ipad at the club and you can ask to use this if you wish to log on to your internet banking to make a direct debit.

Nippers Notice Board

The Nippers have a section of the Whiteboard exclusively for their use. This week you will notice that we have smartened it up so as to make it easy for parents and children to find and read. Please refer to the whiteboard each training session for updates. The website is another spot that you can check regularly for updates and find more indepth information about your club. http://www.brlsc.org.au
